Box ScorePHOENIX, Ariz. – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team fell to the Grand Canyon University Antelopes 3-1 (25-15, 12-25, 13-25, 19-25) on Thursday at Antelope Gymnasium.
Sophomore
Anjané Janda led the Broncs (5-17, 2-6 WAC) with 14 kills. Freshman
Mary Kate Clark dished out 34 assists. Senior
Krysta Freitas recorded 16 digs. Junior
Haley Durham posted five blocks.
Shannon Dugan led the Antelopes (13-9, 3-6 WAC) with 21 kills, 12 digs and three blocks.
Natalie Tardy recorded 12 kills, 12 digs and five blocks.
Michelle Steagall dished out 39 assists.
Mackenzie Phelps recorded a career-high 24 digs.
Janda had four kills in six attacks as the Broncs scored the first five points of the opening set while jumping out to a 9-3 lead. The Antelopes responded with a 7-4 run to pull within three, but the Broncs pushed their lead back to six at 18-12 on a Durham block. The Antelopes scored the next two points, but three kills by senior
Diara Reynolds sparked a 7-1 run to end the set.
The Broncs hit .472 (19-2-36) in the first set.
The Antelopes responded by jumping out to an 8-1 lead in the second set, but kills by Durham and Janda set the Broncs on a 4-0 run to make it 5-8. The Antelopes scored the next five in a row as part of an 8-1 run, however, to pull away and tie the match at 1-1.
The Antelopes served up seven of their 12 aces in the second set.
The Broncs led 6-5 in the third set on a Durham kill, and were within 8-11 on Clark kill, but the Antelopes closed the set on a 14-5 run to go up 2-1 in the match.
The Broncs jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the fourth set thanks in-part to kills by Janda and freshman
Kyra Hill, but the Antelopes responded with a 7-2 run to take the lead. The Broncs tied it on an attack error before the Antelopes scored four straight points to go up 11-7. Hill posted four more kills as part of a 7-1 run that put the Broncs up 14-12. The Antelopes scored the next four points to take the lead, pushing their lead to 21-17 on a
Hannah Hankins kill. After a Reynolds kill, the Antelopes scored four of the final five points to end the match.
The Broncs are back in action on Saturday at 3 p.m. when they visit Bakersfield.
