Box ScoreOREM, Utah – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team fell to the Utah Valley University Wolverines 3-0 (17-25, 12-25, 20-25) in their second match of their four-match road trip on Saturday at the UVU PE Building.
Sophomore
Alisha Watson paced the Broncs (3-14, 1-3 WAC) with a match-high 10 kills while adding four digs and an ace. Junior
Haley Durham added seven kills and a team-high four blocks. Senior
Nausheen Merchant led the way with 10 digs and freshman
Mary Kate Clark posted 22 assists.
Lauren Baker led the Wolverines (7-10, 2-1 WAC) with eight kills and a match-high six blocks. McKenna Tait posted eight digs and Sierra Starley dished out a match-high 30 assists.
The Broncs fell behind early in the first set as the Wolverines jumped out to the 3-0 lead before senior
Diara Reynolds got UTPA on the board with a kill. A kill by Watson got the Broncs within three at 7-10 but Utah Valley went on a 6-0 run to extend their lead 16-7. The Broncs dropped the first set 17-25.
In the second set, the Wolverines once again jumped out to the 3-0 lead. A kill by Durham got the Broncs within two at 4-6 but Utah Valley responded with an 8-0 run to push their lead to 14-4. Back-to-back kills by Watson made it 21-11 in favor of the Wolverines as they picked up the second set victory 25-12.
The Broncs fell behind early in the third set after back-to-back errors. Durham and Anjane Janda combined for a block that got the Broncs within two at 4-6. The Wolverines went on a 8-3 to extend their lead to 14-7. Later in the set, freshman
Kyra Hill posted back-to-back-to-back kills that made it 11-14 but Utah Valley took the third set 25-20 to clinch the match.
The Broncs continue their road trip on October 7 when they face Texas Southern University at 7 p.m. in Houston.
