Box ScoreLAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team fell to the two-time defending WAC Champion New Mexico State Aggies 3-0 (21-25, 16-25, 23-25) on Thursday at the Pan American Center.
Junior
Haley Durham led the Broncs (4-15, 1-4 WAC) with 11 kills on .500 hitting. Sophomore
Anjané Janda finished with 10 kills on .389 hitting.
Gwen Murphy led the Aggies (10-6, 4-1 WAC) with 10 kills on .571 hitting.
Nathali Castellanos finished with nine kills on .692 hitting.
The Broncs controlled play for much of the first set, starting things out with an ace by freshman
Mary Kate Clark and a kill by sophomore
Alisha Watson. The Broncs extended their lead to four on four occasions, including 17-13 on a Janda kill. The Aggies called a timeout and responded with three-straight points, but after a Broncs timeout, a Janda kill put the Broncs up 18-16. After a kill by Castellanos and two by
Andrea Tauai put the Aggies up one, senior
Diara Reynolds responded with a kill to tie the set at 19-19. The Aggies, however, scored six of the final eight points to take a 1-0 lead.
Durham had a pair of early kills as the Broncs built a 6-3 lead in the second set, but the Aggies scored the next eight points to take a lead they never relinquished en route to going up 2-0.
Durham gave the Broncs a pair of early two-point leads in the third set, using kills to make it 6-4 and 7-5 before a kill by Castellanos sparked a 5-1 run to put the Aggies up 10-8. Freshman
Corynn Acuff responded with a kill to bring the Broncs within one, but the Aggies pushed their lead to four twice, including 16-12 on a Nash kill. The Aggies led 18-15 when a kill by Acuff and a pair of attack errors allowed the Broncs to tie it. The Broncs took a 22-21 lead on a block by Durham and Janda, but the Aggies scored four of the final five points to end the match.
The Broncs return home on Thursday at 7 p.m. when they play Chicago State at the UTPA Fieldhouse. Doors open at 6.
