Box ScorePhoto GalleryEDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team fell to the Seattle University Redhawks 3-0 (20-25, 21-25, 20-25) on Saturday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
Junior
Haley Durham led the Broncs (5-20, 2-9 WAC) with eight kills on .312 hitting with two blocks. Freshman
Mary Kate Clark had 22 assists. Senior
Nausheen Merchant posted eight digs.
Matea Mamic led the Redhawks (10-13, 6-4 WAC) with 17 kills on .371 hitting with eight digs.
Kerry Lane recorded a match-high 29 assists.
Stephanie Stoll posted a match-high five blocks.
The first set was tight early, and although the Broncs didn't lead, they had it tied at 3-3, 6-6 and 7-7 on attack errors. Sophomore
Alisha Watson used a kill to tie the set at 8-8 while a block by freshman
Corynn Acuff kept the set tied at 13-13. After a service error, however, Mamic responded with back-to-back kills to spark a 7-0 run as the Redhawks pushed the set out of reach.
The Redhawks scored the first three points of the second set, but the Broncs used a kill by Watson and a pair of blocks by Durham and senior
Diara Reynolds to tie the set. The Broncs took their first lead at 10-9 on a kill by sophomore
Anjané Janda, and then, after an ace by Clark, another Janda kill made it 12-9. The Redhawks came back to tie it at 13-13 before a Watson kill put the Broncs back on top. The Redhawks took the lead a little later, but the Broncs came back to tie it at 16-16 and 17-17 on Reynolds kills. The Redhawks responded with three-straight points as they led for the rest of the set.
The Broncs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second set on a kill by Watson and an ace by Janda. After the Redhawks scored the next three, the Broncs tied it on a kill by redshirt senior
Maria Kliefoth. The set stayed tight most of the way, as it was tied at 19-19 on another kill by Kliefoth, but the Redhawks scored six of the final seven points to win the match.
The Broncs visit Incarnate Word on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
