Box ScoreCHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team closed out the regular season with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-20) win over the Chicago State University Cougars on Saturday at Jacoby Dickens Center.
Junior
Haley Durham led the Broncs (7-22, 3-11 WAC) with 11 kills. Sophomore
Corynn Acuff posted a career-high nine kills with three blocks while senior
Diara Reynolds had nine kills with two blocks.
Elli Woinowsky led the Cougars (6-24, 0-14 WAC) with 13 kills, 10 digs, three assists, two aces and two blocks.
Sophomore
Anjané Janda and Durham each had early kills as the Broncs scored the first three points and went up 4-1 in the opening set. The Cougars came back to take their first lead at 9-8 on a kill by
Chelsea Sheldon-Medina before going up by as many as two at 13-11 on a block by Woinowsky and
Selena Newell. Durham tied the set at 14-14 on a kill and then Reynolds followed with a kill to put the Broncs ahead. The Cougars scored the next two to again take the lead, but Reynolds had two kills and freshman
Mary Kate Clark had one as the Broncs went up 18-16. A little later, with the set tied at 21-21, the Broncs took the lead on a serving error and then used a kill by Durham and two by Janda to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Cougars led for most of the first half of the second set, going up by as many as four at 10-6 on a
Milica Zmiric kill, and 12-8 on an attack error. The Broncs came back to tie it at 14-14 on a Clark kill before taking the lead on an attack error. After a
Sarah Metcalfe kill tied the set at 18-18, the Broncs took advantage of three errors, a Reynolds kill and a Clark ace to score five-straight points and pull away for a 2-0 lead.
The Broncs took control early in the third set, as, down 3-4, a Durham kill sparked a 6-0 run to put the Broncs up five. The Cougars climbed to within two at 8-10, but Acuff kills sandwiched a 4-0 run as the Broncs pulled away to complete the sweep.
The sixth-seeded Broncs open up the WAC Tournament in Bakersfield, Calif. in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 7 p.m. against No. 3 seed Bakersfield.
