Box ScorePhoto GalleryEDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team jumped out to a 32-4 lead and never looked back in an 86-36 home opening win over the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas on Wednesday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
The 50-point win marks the Broncs' (2-2) largest margin of victory since beating Schreiner by 58 (91-33) on Dec. 1, 2007 at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
Sophomore
Shawnte' Goff led the Broncs with 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting with five rebounds, three assists and a career-high six steals. Senior
Tonisha Walker scored a career-high 17 points while hitting a career-high five three-pointers in seven attempts. Senior
Brittany Bush scored 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting.
There were also a number of firsts for the Broncs, as freshman Weslaco alum
Laura Van Tilburg hit her first-career basket while blocking three shots, and redshirt freshman Edinburg alum
Micheline Mercelita made her first appearance, grabbing her first steal that led to her first basket. Additionally, freshman
Troi Swain hit her first-career three.
Micah Weaver led the Javelinas with 10 points and six rebounds.
The Broncs built their 32-4 lead over the first 10:02 by going 13-for-22 (.591) from the field, 2-of-5 from behind the arc, and 4-of-4 from the line with six steals. The Broncs forced 11 turnovers while holding the Javelinas to 2-of-8 shooting.
The Broncs scored the first points of the game on layups by Bush and Goff, and then, after an
Alexis Copeland layup, five different players made the Broncs' next shot attempts as part of a 12-0 run to make it 16-2.
Kyra Bauer then hit a jumper, but Goff scored six points to fuel a 16-0 run.
The Javelinas kept it close over the next seven minutes, getting outscored just 9-8, but a layup by senior
Cherrell Price kicked off an 11-0 run as the Broncs went up by 40 for the first time at 52-12 and never looked back.
The Broncs continue this three-game on home stand on Thursday at 7 p.m. against Concordia at the UTPA Fieldhouse. Doors open at 6.
