Box ScoreBAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The sixth-seeded University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team fell to the third-seeded Bakersfield Roadrunners 3-0 (8-25, 16-25, 18-25) in the WAC Tournament Quarterfinals on Thursday at Icardo Center.
Sophomore
Alisha Watson led the Broncs (7-23) with nine kills and four aces. Freshman
Mary Kate Clark had 20 assists. Redshirt junior
Macey Singleton posted 10 digs.
Kelsee Sawyer led the Roadrunners (14-14) with 12 kills on .400 hitting.
Molly O'Hagan finished with 11 kills on .455 hitting and three blocks.
Luiza Martins dished out a match-high 38 assists while
Mariah Alvidrez had a match-high 14 digs.
Watson had five of the Broncs' seven kills in the opening set, but
Sydney Hayes also had five of her seven kills while
Danika Youngblood had four of her nine and the Roadrunners outhit the Broncs .577-to-.036 to take a 1-0 lead in the match
The Broncs led early in the second set. Down 0-1, a pair of kills by senior
Diara Reynolds sandwiched an ace by Watson to put the Broncs up 3-1. The Roadrunners responded with a 7-3 run to go up 8-4 on a Martins kill. A few serves later, with the Broncs down 7-11, two Reynolds kills and two Watson kills powered a 5-0 run as the Broncs took a 12-11 lead. After a timeout, however, the Roadrunners responded by scoring six-straight points to take the lead, and then, up 20-15, the Roadrunners scored the final five points of the set to go up 2-0.
The Broncs led out of the gate in the third set on an ace by senior
Krysta Freitas. Then, with the set tied 2-2, Watson came up with a kill and two aces to put the Broncs up three. The Broncs took their largest lead at 7-3 on a Sawyer attack error, but after a timeout, a Sawyer kill sparked a 4-0 run as the Roadrunners tied the set. The Broncs took the lead back on a Reynolds kill, but a block by Haynes and
Megan Johnson tied the set at 8-8. After another block put the Roadrunners up 9-8, the two teams started trading points. Down 17-18, a Reynolds killed tied the set, but the Roadrunners scored the final seven points of the match to complete the sweep.
