Box ScoreEDINBURG – Down seven late in the first half, the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team went on a 30-8 run to come from behind and beat the Houston Baptist University Huskies 75-72 on Saturday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
Sophomore
Shawnte' Goff led the Broncs (5-3) in scoring for the seventh time in eight games with a career-high 31 points on 11-of-21 shooting, including 5-of-10 from behind the arc, with five rebounds, one block and four steals. Junior
Rickell Preston scored a career-high 15 points on 7-of-13 shooting with seven rebounds.
Shanice Steenholdt led the Huskies (2-3) with 24 points on 11-of-15 shooting to go with nine rebounds and two blocks.
Monet Neal scored 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting, plus 7-of-12 from the line, with eight rebounds.
The Huskies jumped out to an 8-2 lead before going up as many as seven at 17-10. The Broncs pulled within 21-20 on a Goff three-pointer and then tied it at 27-27 and 29-29 on Preston baskets.
The Huskies then used a 7-0 run to tie their largest lead of the game with 3:36 remaining in the first half, but Goff hit a three-pointer 12 seconds later to start the 30-8 run. Goff scored 17 points during the run, including a three-pointer just before the halftime buzzer to give the Broncs their first lead at 40-39.
The Broncs outscored the Huskies 19-5 over the first 7:15 of the second half, a run capped off by a Goff three that made it 59-44.
The Broncs still led 72-57 after a Goff layup with 7:49 remaining when the Huskies made their own comeback attempt, going on a 15-2 run to pull within two. Preston hit a free throw with 2.5 seconds left and
Ekemini Essien's turnaround three-pointer at the buzzer hit off the rim to end the game.
The Broncs are back in action on Monday at 7 p.m. when they host Texas Lutheran at the UTPA Fieldhouse. Doors open at 6.
Any fans bringing a new, unwrapped toy to benefit Toys for Tots will receive free admission. UTPA students, faculty and staff, who already receive free admission, will get a free t-shirt for their donation.
