EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team fell to the defending WAC Champion New Mexico State University Aggies 3-1 (21-25, 25-23, 21-25, 12-25) on Saturday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

Junior Haley Durham and sophomore Alisha Watson led the Broncs (6-21, 2-10 WAC) with 12 kills each. Watson also had 10 digs for the double-double. Freshman Mary Kate Clark dished out 13 assists with a team-high 13 digs while redshirt senior Maria Kliefoth posted five blocks.

Four Aggies (15-9, 9-3 WAC) reached double-figures in kills, led by Bradley Nash and Nathalie Castellanos, who had 11 kills each. Gwen Murphy and Shelbi Goode finished with 10 kills each. Taylor Livoti dished out 26 assists. Andrea Tauai posted 29 digs and Kassandra Tohm recorded six blocks.

The Broncs led for most of the first half of the first set, taking their first lead at 2-1 on a kill by Watson. The Broncs then extended that lead to 9-6 at the end of a 4-0 run on a kill by sophomore Anjané Janda. The Broncs still led by four at 14-10 on a kill by Durham, but the Aggies responded with a 10-3 run to take the lead en route to taking a 1-0 match lead.

The Broncs jumped out of the gate in the second set as well, again going up 9-6, this time on a kill by redshirt junior Macey Singleton. The Broncs extended their lead to four at 17-13 on a kill by freshman Kyra Hill, but the Aggies responded with an 8-4 run to tie it at 21-21 on a Jordan Abalos kill. Kliefoth and senior Diara Reynolds came up with a block to give the Broncs the lead, and then, one serve later, Reynolds recorded a kill to put the Broncs up 23-22. A Watson kill got the Broncs to set point, and then, after a Nash kill, Watson finished the set with a kill to tie the match 1-1.

The Aggies led 4-3 out of the gate in the third set, but a Durham kill was the first of four-straight points by the Broncs as they took a 7-4 lead. The Broncs pushed their lead to 13-9 on a Durham kill before the Aggies scored the next four points to tie it. The Broncs took a 15-14 lead by a Hill kill, but the Aggies scored the next six points as part of an 8-1 run to pull away and take a 2-1 lead.

The Broncs led 6-4 in the fourth set, but the Aggies used an 11-3 run to pull away for the victory.

The Broncs are back in action on Thursday at 7 p.m. when they visit Kansas City.
