Box ScorePhoto GalleryEDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team is now off to a 6-3 start, tied for the best nine-game start in program history, after a 71-47 victory over the Texas Lutheran University Bulldogs on Monday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
This is the third time in program history the Broncs have been 6-3 through nine games, having previously done so in 2007-08 and 1991-92.
The Broncs grabbed a season-high 21 steals, the seventh most in a single-game in program history. Freshmen
Stephanie Onyeje and
Troi Swain led the way with a career-high five steals each. Senior
T'Ondria Nolen grabbed a career-high four steals. Senior
Tonisha Walker, who led the Broncs with 16 points, had three steals, as did sophomore
Shawnte' Goff. Freshman Weslaco-alum
Laura Van Tilburg also had a steal to go with a career-high nine rebounds. Senior
Cherrell Price led the Broncs with a career-high 10 rebounds.
Karisa Cantu led the Bulldogs with 12 points and four assists.
Taylor Dydalewicz finished with 11 points.
The Broncs led by 10 at halftime, but outscored the Bulldogs 29-9 over the first 11:42 of the second half to pull away. The Broncs grabbed 10 of their steals during that run, forcing 13 turnovers while committing just four. Eight different Broncs scored on 10-of-23 shooting, plus 6-of-8 from the line.
The run started with a Goff layup, the first of seven-straight points by the Broncs, and ended on a free throw by Walker that made it 57-27 with 8:35 remaining.
The Broncs are back in action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. when they visit No. 11 Baylor.
