Box ScoreLUBBOCK – In a game that featured five lead changes and four ties, the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team fell to the Texas Tech Red Raiders 50-42 on Sunday at United Supermarkets Arena.
Freshman
Troi Swain led the Broncs (6-6) with a career-high 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting, including 2-of-4 from behind the arc.
Dayo Olabode led the Red Raiders (6-2) with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting and nine rebounds.
Amber Battle scored 14 points with six rebounds.
The Broncs held the Red Raiders 0-for-14 from behind the arc, marking the first time they failed to hit a three-pointer since the Broncs held them 0-for-8 last season (Nov. 10, 2013).
Freshman
Hildur Björg Kjartansdóttir hit a three and senior
Brittany Bush made a jumper as the Broncs jumped out to a 5-0 lead over the opening four minutes.
A pair of free throws by junior
Rickell Preston put the Broncs up 7-2 before the Red Raiders scored the next six points to take the lead. Senior
Cha'zaye Wright responded with a three to put the Broncs up 10-8, and then, after an Olabode basket, Swain hit a three to give the Broncs the lead.
The Red Raiders took the lead back a little later, but Weslaco High School alum
Laura Van Tilburg hit a jumper to the game at 18-18 before halftime.
The Broncs took the lead back at the start of the second half on jumpers by Bush and Kjartansdóttir, but the Red Raiders went on a 9-2 run to go up 27-23 on an Olabode layup. The Broncs again pulled even, however, this time on a layup by Kjartansdóttir and a jumper by Van Tilburg.
The Red Raiders followed with a 13-5 run to take their largest lead at 40-32 on an Olabode layup with 5:40 remaining, but Swain nailed a three and a layup to bring the Broncs within three.
The Red Raiders pushed their lead out to six on a layup by
Rayven Brooks before a pair of Preston free throws made it 44-40 with 2:23 to go, but the Red Raiders hit all six of their free throw attempts down the stretch to put the game away.
The Broncs play their final home game for almost one month on Thursday at 7 p.m. when they host Incarnate Word at the UTPA Fieldhouse. Doors open at 6.
