Box ScorePhoto GalleryEDINBURG – Three Broncs reached double-figures in scoring as the University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball team beat the University of the Incarnate Word Cardinals 65-61 on Thursday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
The win is head coach
Larry Tidwell's 21
st as a Bronc, moving him into sole possession of fourth place in program history. The late
John McDowell, who is known to have won 36 games from 1982-86, is next on the list.
Sophomore
Shawnte' Goff led the Broncs (7-6) with 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field to go with 6-of-8 shooting from the line. Senior
Brittany Bush scored a season-high 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting to go with seven rebounds (three offensive), three blocks and two steals. Senior
T'Ondria Nolen scored 10 points with five assists.
Yvonne Maosa and
Haley Frias led the Cardinals (3-7) with 11 points each. Maosa also had seven rebounds and four assists while Frias hit a trio of three-pointers.
The Broncs hit six of their first seven shots, including two each for Goff, Bush and Nolen, while jumping out to a 13-2 lead.
Aricka Adams responded with a three to spark a 23-7 run as the Cardinals went up 25-20 on a
Jazmine Holman layup with 7:04 remaining in the first half.
Goff hit a layup, and then freshmen
Hildur Björg Kjartansdóttir and
Troi Swain nailed back-to-back threes as the Broncs took the lead back at 28-25.
The Broncs led 30-28 early in the second half before going on a 14-6 run to go up 44-34 on a jumper by junior
Rickell Preston with 11:10 remaining.
The Cardinals scored the next six points, but after senior
Cha'zaye Wright hit a free throw, Bush converted a three-point play to make it 48-40 with 5:54 to go.
The Cardinals pulled within two on a pair of Frias free throws with 22 seconds left, but the Broncs hit four free throws to put the game away.
The Broncs play their final game of 2014 when they visit Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday at 12 p.m.
