EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team fell to the California State University, Bakersfield Roadrunners 72-64 on Saturday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
Sophomore
Shaquille Hines led four Broncs (6-17, 2-6 WAC) in double-figures scoring by recording his second double-double with 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting with a career-high tying 11 rebounds (four offensive), a career-high five assists, two blocks and a season-high tying two steals. Junior
Shaquille Boga scored 14 points. Graduate student
Javorn Farrell scored 13 points with six rebounds, six assists, two blocks and one steal. Senior
Josh Cleveland scored a season-high 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting.
Issiah Grayson led the Roadrunners (9-13, 2-6 WAC) with 27 points on 8-of-10 shooting, including 3-of-3 from behind the arc, plus 8-of-11 from the line, with four assists and three steals.
Javonte Maynor scored 13 points while going 8-for-8 from the line.
Brandon Barnes scored 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting, plus 4-of-6 from the line, with five rebounds and four assists.
In total, the Roadrunners went 24-for-32 (.750) from the line while the Broncs went 6-for-11 (.545).
Cleveland and Hines each hit their first three shots from the field to help the Broncs build a 16-7 lead in the opening seven minutes.
The Broncs went up 18-9 on a layup by senior
Hurley Johnson with 11:31 remaining in the first half, but after a Barnes layup, Grayson hit a three-pointer and a layup to bring the Roadrunners within 18-16.
Farrell and Boga responded with layups and then Johnson came up with a fast break dunk. After an
Aly Ahmed free throw, Hines hit a jumper to restore the Broncs' nine-point lead at 26-17.
The Roadrunners took their first lead when Grayson punctuated a 13-3 run with a layup to make it 35-34 with 17:09 left in the second half.
Boga responded with a three, kicking off a 10-2 run that saw the Broncs go up 44-37 three minutes later.
The Broncs still led by seven after a Hines layup made it 46-39 with 12:43 remaining, but Grayson scored nine points to power a 14-5 run that saw the Roadrunners go up 53-51.
The Broncs took the lead back at 57-56 on a Hines layup with 5:39 left, but an
Erik Kinney layup sparked a 12-3 run that saw the Roadrunners go up 68-60 with 59 seconds left.
The Broncs are back in action on Thursday 9 p.m. when they visit Seattle U.
