Men's Tennis Set to Host Lamar Friday

EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's tennis team returns home to face the Lamar University Cardinals on Friday at 10 a.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
Last Time Out
The Broncs (2-5) are coming off of a 1-6 loss to the SMU Mustangs on Feb. 9.
 
Alejandro Sanoja picked up the lone point for the Broncs as he defeated Julio Olaya in straight sets 6-2, 6-5 at No. 5 singles.
 
The Broncs played tough at No. 1 and 3 singles as Juan Cruz Soria and Sebastien Job took their matches to three sets. Soria dropped the first set to Arturs Kazijevs but bounced back with a 6-4 win in the second set before falling 6-2 in the third. Job won his first set 6-5 against Mischa Nowicki but dropped the next two sets to close out the match.
 
Scouting the Cardinals
The Cardinals are 4-3 on the season and are coming off of a victory over UT-Arlington, their first win over them in 27 years.
 
Nikita Lis enters the weekend with a 4-0 record after picking up a straight set victory in No. 1 singles. He has defeated opponents from Texas A&M, Alcorn State, Louisiana and UTA.
 
Mikko Rajamaki has put up a 4-2 record in singles after winning a come-from-behind match against UTA. The Cardinals also return Carl-Philip Lindqvist, who was an All-Southland honoree last season.
 
The Series
The Broncs are 38-28-3 all-time against the Cardinals in a series that dates back to 1958. Both teams met last year in Beaumont where the Cardinals won 4-3. The last time the Broncs beat the Cardinals was on April 10, 2010 when they won 6-1 at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
Globetrotters
The Broncs have eight student-athletes representing six countries including, Argentina, Brazil, Belgium, India, Mexico and the United States. Sanoja is from the Rio Grande Valley as he calls Mission home.
 
Next Up
The Broncs are back in action on Sunday at 2 p.m. when they face the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio.
