CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team shot a season-high 51.9 percent from the field to beat the Chicago State University Cougars 75-52 on Thursday at Jones Convocation Center.
The Broncs (12-12, 6-5 WAC) opened up a 40-25 first half lead by hitting eight of their first 12 shots en route to shooting a season-best 61.5 percent (16-for-26) in the half. That includes 57.1 percent shooting (4-for-7) from behind the arc in addition to 100 percent (4-for-4) from the line.
With the win, the Broncs snap a three-game skid while tying for the best 24-game start in program history. The Broncs are now two wins shy of tying the program record for wins in a season.
Junior
Brittany Bush led the Broncs with 16 points while tying her career-high with eight baskets. She also grabbed eight rebounds (four offensive) and added one block. Freshman
Shawnte' Goff scored 13 points on 5-of-11 shooting. Junior
Tonisha Walker scored 12 points on 4-of-10 shooting, including 2-of-5 from behind the arc, with a career-high five steals. Sophomore
KaeLynn Boyd scored 11 points with six assists and three steals.
Tierra Williams and
Jessica Cerda led the Cougars (3-20, 0-10 WAC) with 11 points each.
Tashuna Brown scored 19 points with a game-high nine rebounds.
The Cougars led 7-6 early thanks in-part to a three and a layup by
Konner Harris, but Boyd made back-to-back layups to spark a 13-2 run that put the Broncs up 19-9 with 13:20 remaining in the first half.
The Cougars pulled to within 21-17 on a Cerda three-pointer three minutes later, but Goff hit a three and a jumper, and then, after a Brown layup, senior captain
LaQuita Garner buried a three to restore the Broncs' double-digits lead for the rest of the game.
The Broncs are back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m. when they visit Kansas City.
