EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team dropped the first game of their doubleheader 6-4 to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Saturday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The Islanders (1-1) jumped out to the early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Cody Stevens and Tyler Ware came in to score on Kyle Danford's two-run single.
Sophomore and PSJA alum
Bryan Ramirez led off the inning with a single and then moved to third on junior
Evan Mason's single but a throwing error allowed Ramirez to come in and score. The Broncs (1-1) tied things at two as senior
Alberto Morales hit a sacrifice fly to right field that allowed Mason to score from third.
In the bottom of the fourth,
Michael Baca and
Jesus Garcia reached on a pair of singles. Baca then came into score after a throwing error on the Broncs' double steal giving them the 3-2 lead.
Danford then delivered an RBI single in the top of the sixth inning that scored Tyler Ware from second tying the game at three.
Ramirez started the bottom of the seventh by reaching on an error and then moved to third after a groundball by Morales. Freshman
Victor Garcia Jr. followed with an RBI single to right field scoring Ramirez from third giving the Broncs the 4-3 lead.
The Islanders answered back in the top of the eighth with three runs as Dominic Lopez delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded that scored Zack Gibson and Brandon Tierney to come in and score. Russell Vaughn followed with an RBI single that scored Jacob Hubert from third making it 6-4 Islanders.
Kevin Landgrebe (1-0) kept the Broncs off the final two innings to close out the ball game. He pitched three innings while allowing an unearned run with five strikeouts.
Kyle Tokunaga (0-1) took the loss after allowing three runs in the eighth inning.
The Broncs and Islanders will play the second game of the doubleheader with the first pitch scheduled for 4:35 p.m.
