Rally Falls Short as Women's Basketball Falls at Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Down eight with 36 seconds left, the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team rallied to pull within three before falling to the University of Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos 87-84 on Saturday at Swinney Recreation Center.
 
The Kangaroos (10-14, 6-5 WAC) led 81-73 after a pair of Eilise O'Connor free throws. Six seconds later, sophomore KaeLynn Boyd converted a three-point play to bring the Broncs (12-13, 6-6 WAC) within eight. After Lauren Dudding went 1-for-2 from the line with 22 seconds remaining, junior T'Ondria Nolen drove through the lane for a layup to bring the Broncs within five. O'Connor went 1-for-2 from the line, but junior Tonisha Walker hit a three to bring the Broncs within 85-81 with 11 seconds to go. After O'Connor made two more free throws, senior captain LaQuita Garner nailed a three to make it a three-point game with five seconds left, but the Broncs were unable to foul on the Kangaroos' final possession before the clock expired.
 
Freshman Shawnte' Goff led the Broncs with 20 points. Boyd scored 16 points with five rebounds and three assists. Junior Brittany Bush scored 13 points with nine rebounds. Garner scored a season-high 12 points while sinking a season-high four three-pointers.
 
O'Connor led the Kangaroos with 31 points and five rebounds. Kim Nezianya scored 26 points with 14 rebounds. Grace Mitchell scored 10 points with five rebounds
 
The game was tight throughout, with neither team going up by more than five until the 13:18 mark of the second have, when Taylor Leathers made a jumper to put the Kangaroos up 53-46. Boyd responded with a three to kick-off a 13-6 run that saw the Broncs tie the game at 59-59 on a jumper by junior Jasmine Thompson with 9:56 remaining.
 
The Broncs took the lead back at 65-63 after a Goff layup two minutes later, and led 69-68 after a Nolen layup with 5:53 left, but O'Connor responded with a jumper and the Broncs never led again.
 
The Broncs complete this three-game road trip on Thursday at 7 p.m. when they visit New Mexico State.
