Baseball Drops 11-Inning Heartbreaker to No. 15 Texas

AUSTIN – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball got to within two outs of upsetting the No. 15 University of Texas Longhorns, but a ninth inning sacrifice fly and an 11th inning walk off single sent the Longhorns past the Broncs 2-1 on Tuesday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
 
The Broncs (5-4) got their run against Josh Sawyer in the third. With junior Michael Baca at second and two outs, junior Jesus Garcia singled up the middle to score Baca and make it 1-0.
 
Broncs pitching made the lead standup until the ninth.
 
In his first start, junior Alex Henson pitched six innings, allowing two singles, both of which were to Brooks Marlow, and two walks while striking out two.
 
Senior Kyle Tokunaga and redshirt senior and Edinburg alum Austin Casas pitched a scoreless inning each to send the game to the ninth with the Broncs still up 1-0.
 
Junior Clayton Haltom started the ninth by walking Kacy Clemens and Andy McGuire. Freshman Tanner Dickerson came on in relief and got Jeremy Montalbano to drop his bunt directly in front of the plate, allowing the Broncs to get the lead runner. A wild pitch moved the runners into scoring position, leading to an intentional walk of Tres Barrera. Ben Johnson followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1.
 
In the bottom of the 11th, Alex Silver drew a leadoff walk against Logan Landon (0-1). Two outs later, with Silver at third, Jacob Felts hit a walk off single to give the Longhorns (6-3) the win.
 
Nathan Thornhill (3-0) pitched three scoreless innings of relief for the win.
 
The Broncs outhit the Longhorns 10-to-4.
 
The Broncs are back in action on Friday at 6:30 p.m. when the open up a three-game series at Lamar.
