Hines' Late Three Pushes Men's Basketball Past Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – With the University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball team down two with 18 seconds left, sophomore Shaquille Hines hit a three-pointer to send the Broncs past the California State University, Bakersfield Roadrunners 63-61 on Thursday at Rabobank Arena.
 
The shot was set-up by stifling defense by the Broncs, as they held the Roadrunners without a field goal over the final 4:08 to come back from down 59-57.
 
Hines led the Broncs (9-20, 5-9 WAC) and all scorers with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting while playing all 40 minutes. Junior Shaquille Boga finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
 
Javonte Maynor led the Roadrunners (12-16, 5-9 WAC) with 15 points while going 5-for-11 from behind the arc. Issiah Grayson scored 12 points with eight assists. Brandon Barnes scored 11 points with six rebounds.
 
The Broncs were in control for the first 18 minutes of the game, going up by as many as 18 on a Hines dunk that made it 36-18 with 2:12 remaining. The Broncs held the Roadrunners to 30 percent shooting (9-for-30), including 25 percent from behind the arc (2-for-8), while shooting 46.4 percent (13-for-28), including 50 percent (3-of-6) from behind the arc, in the first half.
 
In the second half, however, the Roadrunners hit 14 of their first 22 shots (63.6 percent), including five threes, spanning the first 16 minutes. The Roadrunners took the lead for the first time on a Barnes jumper that made it 50-48 with 10:20 left. Barnes followed with another jumper to give the Roadrunners their first of three four-point leads, their largest of the game.
 
The Broncs are back in action on Saturday at 8 p.m. when they visit Utah Valley.
