BEAUMONT – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team scored three runs in the sixth inning to come from behind and beat the Lamar University Cardinals 4-1 on Friday at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
The Broncs (6-4) were held to two walks and a hit batsman through the first five innings by
Chase Angelle (1-1). With one out in the sixth, however, junior
Jesus Garcia reached on an infield-single, and then, after a fielder's choice, senior
Alberto Morales singled. An error allowed the runners to move to second and third, setting up a two-run single by freshman
Victor Garcia Jr. Senior
Dillon Engelhart followed with an RBI-double to put the Broncs up 3-1.
That was more than enough for senior
Sam Street (3-0), who pitched his second complete game of the season, striking out nine while scattering eight hits and one walk.
The Broncs added an insurance run in the ninth, when Engelhart led off with a single, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout, and scored on an RBI-single by senior
Andy Fortuna.
Garcia and Engelhart each went 2-for-4.
The Cardinals (6-4) got their run in the second.
Kevin Santana led off the inning with a double. After a walk and an infield-single loaded the bases,
Jake Sutton grounded into a double play, allowing Santana to score to make it 1-0.
Angelle went the first seven for the Cardinals, striking out eight while allowing four hits and two walks.
Sam Bumpers and
Jacoby Middleton led the Cardinals offensively, as they each went 2-for-4.
The Broncs and Cardinals play game two of this three-game series on Saturday at 2 p.m.
