FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's tennis team hits the road for a doubleheader against the No. 64 Arkansas Razorbacks at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Friday at the George M. Billingsley Tennis Center.
Last Time Out
The Broncs (2-2) picked up their first two wins of the season on Saturday as they faced the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles and the Prairie View A&M Panthers at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
The Broncs opened the day with a 4-3 victory over the Golden Eagles. The Broncs jumped out to an early lead as they clinched the doubles point after the duo of
Sebastien Job and
Alejandro Sanoja defeated ORU's team of Fabian Zierleyn and Jason Mechali 6-3 in No. 1 doubles.
Chetan Panditi started off singles with a victory at No. 3 spot after defeating Mechali 6-1, 6-1. Sanoja then added to the Broncs lead with a straight set victory over Cole Guy in No. 6 singles.
The Golden Eagles answered back with wins at No. 5 and 4 singles but the Broncs put the match away as
Juan Cruz Soria beat Amar Saletovic 5-6, 6-5, 6-0 in No. 1 singles taking the match 4-3.
In the afternoon, the Broncs defeated the Panthers 7-0. In doubles, the Broncs took control of the match early as they clinched the doubles point after
Ricardo Hopker and
Mauricio Fosado beat David Aldaz and Carlos McIntyre 6-2.
The Broncs swept through singles as Hopker got things started with a victory over Rasaki Gbadamosi 6-2, 6-3. Fosado clinched the match for the Broncs with a win in No. 5 singles defeating David Aldaz 6-2, 6-4. Sanoja then closed out the match with a win at No. 6 singles defeating McIntyre in three sets 2-6, 6-5, 10-4.
Scouting the Razorbacks
The No. 64 Razorbacks are 4-3 on the season and are coming off a 6-1 loss to No. 39 Minnesota. Johan den Toom picked up the only point for the Razorbacks as he won his match in No. 5 singles.
The Razorbacks have wins against Mercer, East Tennessee State and Wisconsin-Green Bay. Besides Minnesota, Arkansas has losses to Texas and Dartmouth.
The Razorbacks return seven from last season's squad in Hall Fess, Mandred Jeske, Christian Lee, Santiago Munoz, Mike Nott, Jovan Parlic and Pete Thomason.
Thomason (10), Parlic (11) and Nott (11) each finished last season with double-digit victories.
The Series
The Broncs are 4-3 all-time against the Razorbacks in a series that dates back to 1970. The last time these two teams face each other was last season when the Razorbacks defeated the Broncs 6-1 on the campus of Texas A&M.
Globetrotters
The Broncs have eight student-athletes representing six countries including, Argentina, Brazil, Belgium, India, Mexico and the United States. Sanoja is from the Rio Grande Valley as he calls Mission home.
Next Up
The Broncs continue their road trip as they travel to Dallas to face SMU at 12 p.m. on Sunday at the Bent Tree Country Club.
