Women's Basketball Drops Overtime Heart Breaker

EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team rallied back from a 14-point deficit to take the lead late in regulation, but ultimately fell to the defending Western Athletic Conference champion Seattle University Redhawks 75-68 in overtime on Thursday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
 
Freshman Shawnte' Goff led the Broncs (11-11, 5-4 WAC) with 17 points, three rebounds, five assists and one block. Junior Jasmine Thompson scored 12 points with seven rebounds and one steal.
 
Sylvia Shephard led the Redhawks (11-11, 6-3 WAC) with 22 points on 6-of-10 shooting while going 9-of-10 from the line with seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Kacie Sowell scored 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting, plus 2-of-3 from the line, with 12 rebounds. Alexis Montgomery scored 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting with four rebounds.
 
The Broncs, who entered the week 20th in the NCAA in turnover margin (+5.05) forced 30 turnovers while committing 16 for a +14 differential. The Broncs scored 27 points off those turnovers.
 
The Redhawks took their largest lead of the game on the opening possession of the second half when Montgomery nailed a jumper to make it 33-19. Over the next seven minutes, the Broncs forced six turnovers and Thompson scored eight points to fuel an 18-7 run as the Broncs pulled within 40-37. 
 
Sowell scored the game's next four points to push the Redhawks' lead to three possessions, but sophomore KaeLynn Boyd made a layup to spark an 11-2 that saw the Broncs go up 48-46 on a Brittany Bush layup with 6:54 remaining.
 
The game stayed within one possession for the rest of regulation. The Broncs led 60-58 with 59 seconds to go, but Montgomery made a layup with 18 seconds left to force overtime.
 
Montgomery hit the first basket of overtime, but junior T'Ondria Nolen and sophomore Rickell Preston made baskets to give the Broncs a 64-62 lead with 3:09 remaining.
 
Montgomery responded with a three-point play as the Redhawks closed the came on a 13-4 run.
 
The Broncs host first place Idaho on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the UTPA Fieldhouse for Military Appreciation Night. All active and retired military personnel will get $2 admission with proper identification. Doors open at 6.
