DALLAS – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's tennis team closes out their three-match road trip on Sunday at 1 p.m. against the Southern Methodist University Mustangs at the Bent Tree Country Club.
Last Time Out
The Broncs faced the No. 64 Arkansas Razorbacks in a doubleheader on Friday at the George M. Billingsley Tennis Center.
The Broncs (2-4) fell in the first match of the day 1-6 as they got their only point from
Joseph Bishop in No. 6 singles. He defeated Arkansas' Juan Marino in three sets. After dropping the first set 3-6, Bishop bounced back to take the second set 6-2 and the tiebreaker 6-3.
In the second match of the day, the Broncs fell 1-6. It was Bishop again who provided the Broncs with their lone point. This time, Bishop beat Jacob Herndon. After dropping the first set 4-6, Bishop took the second set 6-2 and then took the tiebreaker 10-6 to clinch the point.
Scouting the Mustangs
The Mustangs are 4-3 on the season and are coming off a 7-0 victory over Abilene Christian on Saturday.
Arturs Kazijevs is ranked 73
rd in singles matches while having a 3-3 record in dual matches and an 8-4 tournament record.
Arkidjas Slobodkins leads the Mustangs with a 5-1 record while going 3-0 in No. 5 singles and 2-1 in No. 6 singles.
The doubles team Alex Sanders and Nate Lemons ranks eighth as they have a record of 3-2 in dual matches and 10-3 in tournament play.
The Mustangs have faced three ranked opponents this season, which account for all three losses, in No. 20 Texas, #30 Drake and #9 Texas A&M. They have recorded wins against Illinois State, Florida Gulf Coast, UTSA and Abilene Christian.
The Series
The Broncs are 1-13 all-time against SMU in a series going back to 1969. The last time these two teams have met was back on Jan. 21, 2012 when the Mustangs beat the Broncs 7-0 in Dallas.
Globetrotters
The Broncs have eight student-athletes representing six countries including, Argentina, Brazil, Belgium, India, Mexico and the United States. Sanoja is from the Rio Grande Valley as he calls Mission home.
Next Up
The Broncs are back in action on Feb. 14 when they come back home to host Lamar at 10 a.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
