Men's Tennis Closes Out Road Trip With Loss to SMU

DALLAS – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's tennis wrapped up their three-match road trip with a 1-6 loss to the Southern Methodist University Mustangs at the Bent Tree Country Club on Sunday.
 
The Mustangs (5-3) jumped out early in doubles as the team of Arturs Kazijevs and Mischa Nowicki defeated the Broncs' team of Juan Cruz Soria and Sebastien Job 6-2 in No. 1 doubles. Tony Russell and Arkidjas Slobodkins gave SMU the doubles point with a 6-2 win over Joseph Bishop and Alejandro Sanoja in No. 3 doubles.
 
In singles, the Mustangs picked up straight set victories at No. 2, 4 and 6 singles. The Broncs (2-5) got their lone point of the match at No. 5 singles as Sanoja defeated Julio Olaya in straight sets 6-2, 6-5 (8-6).
 
The Broncs played tough at No. 1 and 3 singles as Soria and Job took their matches to three sets. Soria dropped the first set to Kazijevs 3-6 but bounced back with a 6-4 win in the second set before falling 6-2 in the third. Job won his first set 6-5 against Nowicki but dropped the next two sets to close out the match.
 
The Broncs are back in action on Feb. 14 at the Orville Cox Tennis Center when they host UTSA at 10 a.m.
