EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team tied the program records for wins and conference wins in a season with a 55-46 victory over the Utah Valley University Wolverines on Saturday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
This is the fourth time the Broncs (14-14, 8-7 WAC) have ever won 14 games in a season, having also done so in 2009-10, 2008-09 and 2004-05. The only other time the Broncs have won eight conference games with in 2009-10, when they went 8-4 in the Great West Conference.
The Broncs also clinch a top-four seed in the WAC Tournament by virtue of Bakersfield's 96-90 victory over New Mexico State. Bakersfield swept both New Mexico State (7-8) and Kansas City (6-8) this season. The Broncs split with Bakersfield. In the case of a tie, the Broncs, who split the season series with all three of those teams, would win the tiebreaker. The first tiebreaker is head-to-head record, while the second tiebreaker is head-to-head record against WAC opponents starting at the top of the standings and descending until the tie is broken. All three teams were swept by Idaho (13-1), which has already clinched the top seed. Bakersfield has clinched the number two seed.
The Broncs can still finish with the number three seed if they beat Grand Canyon in their final game of the season on Saturday, March 8 at 3 p.m., and Seattle U (8-6) falls at home to Kansas City on Thursday and Chicago State on Saturday.
The Broncs were led in scoring by freshman
Shawnte' Goff, who scored 16 points with five rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal. Sophomore
Rickell Preston scored 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting with eight rebounds and two steals.
Katie Kuklok led the Wolverines (7-21, 4-11 WAC) with 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
The game remained within one possession for the first 23 minutes. Goff hit a layup with 16:50 remaining to give the Broncs the first two possession lead of the game at 29-25.
The Wolverines took the lead back at 32-31 on a
Rhaiah Spooner-Knight layup with 14:13 left, but five seconds later, Goff nailed a three to kick-off a 14-0 run as the Broncs pulled away, going up 45-32 on a Preston layup.
