LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The fourth-seeded University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team fell to the fifth-seeded New Mexico State University Aggies 86-74 in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinals on Wednesday at Orleans Arena.
Sophomore
KaeLynn Boyd led three Broncs (14-16) in double-figures scoring with 21 points on 6-of-13 shooting, including 2-of-5 from behind the arc, plus 7-of-12 from the line, with eight rebounds and five assists. Freshman
Shawnte' Goff scored 20 points on 7-of-17 shooting, including 2-of-3 from behind the arc. Junior
Jasmine Thompson notched her first double-double with 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting with 12 rebounds.
Danesia Williamson led the Aggies (11-19) with 37 points on 9-of-25 shooting, plus 17-of-19 from the foul line, with five rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Sasha Weber scored 19 points with 10 rebounds.
Abby Scott scored 10 points.
The Broncs jumped out to an 11-2 lead as Thompson hit a pair of layups and Boyd hit a three-pointer, converted a three-point play and added an additional free throw.
The Aggies pulled to within 18-17 on a Williamson jumper with 11:30 remaining in the first half, but after a Goff three, the Broncs went on to push their lead out to 14 on a three by junior
Cherrell Price that made it 37-23 with 7:06 left in the first half.
The Broncs went up by as many as 15 twice, including 45-30 after a pair of Goff free throws at the 1:43 mark of the first.
The Broncs led 54-40 in the opening minutes of the second half, but that's when the Aggies offense exploded. Williamson used a layup to spark a 34-7 run as the Aggies went up 76-61 on a Scott three with 7:33 remaining.
