Baseball Falls to No. 15 Oklahoma State in the Ninth

STILLWATER, Okla. – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team led by a run heading into the bottom of the ninth inning but the No. 15 Oklahoma State University Cowboys rallied for two runs to win 7-6 on Saturday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.

With the Broncs (10-11) leading 6-5, the Cowboys rallied to load the bases against senior Matthew Harrell. Tim Arakawa delivered the two-run walk-off single giving the Cowboys (14-6) the series win over the Broncs.

Harrell (2-3) took the loss after pitching an inning and a third while allowing two runs, none of which were earned.

The Broncs jumped out in front in the top of the first against Oklahoma State's starter Thomas Hatch. After two quick outs in the inning, freshman Victor Garcia Jr. singled up the middle and then moved to third on a double by senior Alberto Morales. Red-shirt freshman and Edinburg High alum Edgar Cordon delivered a two-round triple scoring Garcia and Morales making it 2-0.

The Cowboys answered in the bottom of the second inning against Broncs' starter Blake English with a pair of RBI singles from Ryan Sluder and Dustin Williams tying the game at two.

Morales started the top of the fourth inning with a double and then moved to third on Cordon's second hit of the game. Senior Shane Ammon then followed that with an RBI single to left field scoring Morales from third. Later in the inning, the Broncs took advantage of a throwing error by the Cowboys that allowed Cordon to score from third giving them the 4-2 lead.

Craig McConaughy tied the ball game at four in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run double off of reliever Kyle Tokunaga.

The Broncs then regained the lead in the top of the sixth. Ammon led off the inning with a single and then came around to score on an RBI double by Blake Thomas. A couple of batters later, Thomas came into score on a passed ball making it 6-4.

Oklahoma State picked up a run in the bottom of the seventh on a wild pitch that made it 6-5 in favor of the Broncs which set up their walk-off in the bottom of the ninth.

The Broncs return to action on Tuesday when they face the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders in doubleheader with the first game scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
