Baseball Drops Game One of Doubleheader at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

Box Score

CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team fell to the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Islanders 8-7 in game one of a doubleheader on Tuesday at Chapman Field.

Down 1-0 after the first inning, the Broncs (10-12) put runners at first and second with one out in the second. Junior Evan Mason followed with a single to left field that would have loaded the bases, but an error in left field allowed senior Shane Ammon to score to tie the game. After junior Jesus Garcia walked to load the bases, senior Alex Howe hit a two-run double to knock out Islanders (9-13) starter Gavin Williamson. Freshman Victor Garcia Jr. followed with an RBI-groundout and then senior Alberto Morales capped the inning with an RBI-single to make it 5-1.

Howe and sophomore PSJA alum Bryan Ramirez each finished 2-for-4. Howe added two runs scored to his two RBI while Ramirez scored a run as well.

Kyle Tokunaga started for the Broncs, pitching five innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out two.

The Broncs added a run in the third on a Mason sacrifice fly, and another one in the fourth on an error to go up 7-2.

Frankie Salas and Jordan Lee homered in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, to bring the Islanders within 7-4.

In the eighth, the Islanders loaded the bases with one out, but senior Matthew Harrell (2-4) came in and, after allowing a sacrifice fly to Tyler Ware and walks to Lee and Brandon Tierney to make it a one-run game, struck out Zack Gibson to end the threat.

In the ninth, Kyle Danford led off with a double, and then, after a sacrifice bunt and a walk, Salas hit a game-tying single. An intentional walk loaded the bases, and then freshman Tanner Dickerson came in and allowed a walk-off single to Ware.

That made a winner of Tyler Schnuriger (1-1), who pitched three perfect innings, striking out five.

The Broncs and Islanders play game two of this doubleheader in approximately 30 minutes.
