Baseball Takes WAC Opener

Box Score

EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team scored seven runs in the fifth inning en route to taking its Western Athletic Conference opener 9-4 over the New Mexico State University Aggies on Friday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

The Broncs (11-13, 1-0 WAC) didn't have a hit against Christopher Bradley (1-3) through the first three innings, but sophomore PSJA alum Bryan Ramirez and freshman Victor Garcia Jr. started the fourth with back-to-back double. Three batters later, junior Jesus Garcia hit a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.

In the fifth, the Broncs loaded the bases with nobody out to chase Bradley. Riley Barr came in and, after getting an infield-pop out, plunked a batter to force-in a run. Freshman Blake Thomas followed with a fly ball to right field to score senior Alberto Morales, who knocked the ball out catcher Taylor Noyer's glove while scoring. The ball got far enough way to allow senior Dillon Engelhart to score. Matt Moriarty came in out of the bullpen and plunked two of the four batters he faced. The other two batters drove in runs, on an RBI-single by junior Evan Mason and a three-run double by senior Alex Howe to make it 9-0.

That was plenty of support for senior Sam Street (6-0), who retired 18 of the first 21 batters he faced. After retiring the first nine, the Aggies (8-13, 0-1 WAC) loaded the bases on an infield-single, a bunt-single and a hit batsman. Street responded by getting a pop out, a strikeout and a lineout to prevent any runs from scoring. That started another streak of nine-straight retired by Street.

The Aggies got their runs in the seventh. After putting two on with one out, Jory Goldstrom hit an RBI-single. A walk loaded the bases, and then, with two outs, Michael Medina hit a bases clearing triple.

That was it against Street, who pitched his fourth complete game of the season, striking out five while allowing eight hits and two walks.

The Broncs and Aggies play game two of this three-game series on Saturday at 6 p.m. Gates open at 5.
