Baseball Drops Middle Game to New Mexico State

Box Score

EDINBURG – Senior Alex Howe hit a pair of doubles and drove in three runs, but the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team fell to the New Mexico State University Aggies 7-4 on Saturday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

Howe hit his first double in the first, but was stranded. In the fifth, however, with the Broncs (11-14, 1-1 WAC) down 4-1 and the bases loaded with two outs, Howe cleared the bases with a double to tie the game.

In the sixth, however, the Aggies (9-13, 1-1 WAC) loaded the bases with nobody out against senior Matthew Harrell (2-5). Freshman Tanner Dickerson came in and, after getting the first out, induced a grounder to first that was misplayed, allowing a run to score. Ryan Wagner followed with a sacrifice fly and then Joseph Koerper reached on an error that scored a run to make it 7-4.

That made a winner of Zach Freeman (2-2), who pitched three and one-third innings of hitless relief, striking out three.

Trey Gonzales pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth save.

The Aggies loaded the bases against junior Broncs starter Alex Henson with one out in the second. Kevin Carswell followed with a two-run single, and then, an out and a walk later, Michael Paulson hit a hot shot to short that got past junior Jesus Garcia and into left field to score two runs to make it 4-0 Aggies.

Freshman Nikki Rowe alum Andrew Padron came on in relief and pitched three and one-third scoreless innings.

The Broncs broke through against Aggies starter Billy Conard in the fourth when senior Alberto Morales launched his second home run of the season into left field bullpen to make it 4-1.

The Broncs and Aggies complete this three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m. Any fan that brings four non-perishable food items will receive a free ticket as part of the Broncs' partnership with the RGV Food Bank known as "Strike Out Hunger." Gates open at 12.
