EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team completed the three-game sweep of the Arlington Baptist College Patriots with a 4-2 win in the second game of their doubleheader on Saturday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
Senior
Matthew Harrell (2-1) pitched six and a third innings and allowed two runs, one earned, while scattering five hits and striking out three.
The Broncs (9-7) got on the board in the bottom of the third against Patriots' (10-12) starter Caleb Sims.
Jesus Garcia drew a one-out walk, stole second base and then came in to score on
Evan Mason's RBI single to right field. After a single by Victor Garcia Jr.,
Alberto Morales hit an RBI single that allowed Mason to score giving the Broncs the 2-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth,
Shane Ammon led off with a single and
Blake Thomas reached after getting hit by a pitch. After both runners moved up on a deep fly out by
Lee Rios, Garcia followed with a two-run single that allowed Ammon and Thomas to score making it 4-0.
The Patriots got their two runs against Harrell in the top of the seventh on a two-run double by Justin Watson that allowed Ryan Wagley and Florentino Moreno to score which cut the Broncs' lead to 4-2.
That would be all the scoring for the Patriots as
Tanner Dickerson came on in relief to pick up his first save of the season. Dickerson pitched two and two-third innings while not allowing a run on just one hit and two strikeouts.
The Broncs start a five-game road trip on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. when they face the No. 25 Texas A&M University Aggies in the first game of a two-game series.
