EDINBURG – In their fourth overtime game of the season, the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team fell to the Grand Canyon University Antelopes 79-78 on Saturday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
Sophomore
Shaquille Hines led five Broncs (9-22, 5-11 WAC) in double-figures scoring with 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting, plus 7-of-9 from the line, with 10 rebounds for his third double-double. Junior
Shaquille Boga scored 20 points on 8-of-18 shooting, including 2-of-4 from behind the arc, with seven rebounds and four assists. Senior
Hurley Johnson tied his career-high in scoring with 14 points on 4-of-9 shooting, including a career-high tying three three-pointers. Senior
Justin Leathers scored 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting, including 2-of-4 from behind the arc, with four assists. Senior
Josh Cleveland scored 10 points on 6-of-8 shooting with six rebounds and two steals.
Killian Larson led three Antelopes (15-14, 10-6 WAC) in double-figures scoring with 29 points on 10-of-16 shooting, plus 9-of-15 from the line, with 16 rebounds.
Daniel Alexander scored 14 points with nine rebounds, seven assists and three blocks.
Jeremy Adams scored 14 points.
Jerome Garrison scored 12 points while going 10-for-11 from the line.
The Antelopes took their largest lead at 62-56 on a Larson layup with 4:01 left in regulation, and still led by four with 2:20 remaining after a pair of Garrison free throws, but a free throw by Johnson and a layup by Boga brought the Broncs within 65-64 with 50 seconds left.
Akachi Okugu made a pair of free throws with 11 seconds to go to put the Antelopes up by three, but Leathers nailed a three with three seconds left to force overtime.
The Antelopes led 77-73 with 47 seconds left in overtime after a pair of Okugo free throws. Cleveland made a layup to bring the Broncs within two, and then Okugo went 1-for-2 from the line to make it a three-point game. Leathers hit a long jumper from the right wing with his toes on the line to make it a one-point game with 11 seconds remaining, and then Garrison and Johnson traded free throws to keep it a one point game, but Cleveland's turnaround jumper at the buzzer missed wide left.
The Broncs jumped out to a 9-0 lead while going 4-for-4 from the field with baskets from Cleveland, Leathers, Boga and Dantzler in the opening minutes
The Antelopes went 6-of-7 from the line and hit their first basket to climb within 9-8, but the Broncs went on a 7-2 run, capped by a Leathers three-pointer, to go up 16-10 with 8:20 remaining in the first half.
Killian Larson hit three layups and a pair of free throws to power a 10-3 run as the Antelopes took their first lead at 20-19 four minutes later.
The Broncs held the Antelopes to 25.9 percent shooting in the first half, but the Antelopes went 9-for-11 from the line while the Broncs were 4-for-4 to keep the game tied at 23.
In the second half, the Broncs shot 60.7 percent while going 7-for-12 from the line. The Antelopes shot 50 percent, but went 14-for-18 from the line as each team scored 44 points.
For the game, the Antelopes went 30-for-40 from the line, while the Broncs were 13-for-20.
The Broncs open the WAC Tournament as the eight seed in the quarterfinals against top seed Utah Valley on Thursday at 2 p.m. at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nev.
