Box ScoreOREM, Utah – Junior
Blake English pitched a five-hit shutout and the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team pounded out a season-high tying 13 hits to beat the Utah Valley University Wolverines 13-0 in a game that ended after seven innings due to the 10-run rule on Saturday at Brent Brown Ballpark.
In his first complete game, English (3-2) struck out four while walking one. He induced 10 groundouts and seven fly outs.
It was the Broncs' (15-22, 5-6 WAC) second-straight game reaching double-figures in hits, as five Broncs had two-hit games, including redshirt freshman Edinburg alum
Edgar Cordon, senior
Alex Howe, redshirt junior Edinburg alum
Lee Rios, sophomore PSJA alum
Bryan Ramirez and senior
Shane Ammon. All nine Broncs reached base, with eight Broncs recording hits. Additionally, each of the Broncs first eight hitters had at least one RBI and one run scored. Rios finished with a career-high three runs scored, while three others scored twice. Four Broncs drove in two runs.
The Broncs jumped on the board in the second against Wolverines (13-20, 6-5 WAC) starter
Ryan Evans (2-3) when, with two on and one out, freshman
Omar Avila came up with an RBI-groundout to make it 1-0.
In the third, the Broncs put runners at second and third with one out. Senior
Alberto Morales drove-in the first runner with an RBI-groundout, and then Rios hit an RBI-single to knock out Nelson. After moving to second on an error and third on a wild pitch, Rios scored on an RBI-single by Ramirez. After Ramirez stole second, Ammon capped the inning with an RBI-single to make it 5-0.
The Broncs pulled off a two-out double-steal with Avila and junior
Jesus Garcia in the fourth, and then senior
Alex Howe hit an RBI-single to put the Broncs up 7-0.
The Wolverines had their best chance to score in the bottom of the inning, when they put runners at second and third with nobody out, but
Craig Brinkerhoff struck out,
Riley White grounded back to the pitcher and
Jackson Kunz flied out to end the threat.
After being held without a run in the fifth and sixth innings, the Broncs loaded the bases with nobody out in the seventh. Ammon and Avila walked to force-in two runs. One out later, Garcia hit a two-run single and Cordon hit an RBI-single, and then, with two outs, Morales hit an RBI-single to cap the inning.
The Broncs go for the series sweep of the Wolverines on Sunday at 1 p.m.
