English Strong in Loss to Bakersfield

Box Score

EDINBURG – University of Texas-Pan American junior pitcher Blake English allowed just one earned run in eight innings, but the Broncs baseball team fell to the California State University, Bakersfield Roadrunners 3-2 on Friday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

English (3-3) allowed three total runs on five hits, one hit batsman while striking out four.

The Roadrunners (15-21, 8-6 WAC) got their only earned run in the third when, with runners at second and third and one out, Max Carter hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1.

The Broncs (16-24, 6-8 WAC) led 2-1 going into the fifth, but with two outs, Ross Hough hit a line drive to right that handcuffed redshirt junior Edinburg alum Lee Rios. After Hough stole second, Jordie Hein hit an RBI-single to tie the game.

With two outs in the seventh, Hough singled. He moved to third on a single to left by Hein. The throw back to the infield got away, allowing Hough to score to complete the scoring.

That made a winner of James Barragan (4-4), who pitched five and two-thirds innings of one-hit baseball, striking out six.

The Broncs got off to a quick start, as, after senior Alex Howe led off with a double, sophomore PSJA alum Bryan Ramirez hit an RBI-double to make it 1-0.

Ramirez finished 2-for-4 with a walk.

After the Roadrunners tied the game in the top of the third, the Broncs took the lead back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI-single by senior Alberto Morales.

The Broncs and Roadrunners complete this three-game series on Saturday at 1 p.m. Gates open at 12.
