Box ScoreAUSTIN – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team built a 4-1 lead over the No. 10 University of Texas Longhorns over the first half of the game, but the Longhorns came back to beat the Broncs 5-4 on Tuesday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
The Broncs (17-25) jumped on Longhorns (31-11) starter
Lukas Schiraldi right away, loading the bases with nobody out. Senior
Alex Howe came up and hit a grounder to second for an RBI-fielder's choice to make it 1-0.
In the second, the Broncs put runners at second and third with one out in advance of a sacrifice fly by senior
Shane Ammon to make it 2-0.
The Longhorns got that run back in the bottom of the inning on a bases loaded walk by
Ben Johnson.
The Broncs pushed their lead back out to two in the fourth when, with runners at second and third and one out, Ammon grounded out to bring home a run and make it 3-1.
The Broncs went up 4-1 on a suicide squeeze by junior
Jesus Garcia in the top of the fifth, but in the bottom the inning,
Zane Gurwitz hit an RBI-single and
CJ Hinojosa scored on a wild pitch to make it a one-run game.
With one out in the sixth, Johnson blasted his fifth home run of the season to tie the game at 4-4.
The Longhorns took the lead in the eighth against freshman Nikki Rowe alum
Andrew Padron (1-3) on an RBI-single by
Mark Payton.
That made a winner of
Morgan Cooper (4-1), who recorded the final two outs of the eighth.
John Curtiss pitched a scoreless ninth for his sixth save.
Senior
Alberto Morales led the Broncs with his first three-hit game of the season, recording a double, a run scored and a stolen base out of the leadoff spot.
The Broncs resume Western Athletic Conference play on Friday at 6 p.m. when they open a three-game series at Chicago State.
