Men's Tennis Falls to Idaho in Semifinals of WAC Tournament

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The sixth-seeded University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's tennis team fell to the second-seeded University of Idaho Vandals 4-2 in the semifinals of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday at the New Mexico State Tennis Center.
 
Due to weather, the match started with singles competition and doubles were to be play if there was a tie following singles.
 
The Vandals (10-13) started off the match with victories at No.1 and No. 2 singles but the Broncs (4-17) answered back on courts four and five. Sophomore Alejandro Sanoja got the Broncs on the board with a 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 victory over Cesar Torres at No. 5 singles. Senior Ricardo Hopker followed with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Odon Barta at No. 4 singles to even the match but the Vandals won on the final two courts to put the match away.
 
"This is a wonderful team," Broncs head coach Brandon Stokes said. "They are group of guys that persevered through ups and downs with a positive attitude, unbreakable spirit and a resilient mindset. The record does not indicate how much these boys gave to each other and UTPA."
 
The Vandals move on to the championship match on Sunday against top-seeded New Mexico State University.
