Baseball Drops Non-Conference Finale at Incarnate Word

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team fell in its final non-conference game of the regular season, 6-2 to the University of the Incarnate Word Cardinals on Tuesday at Daniel Sullivan Field.

The Broncs (19-27) were held silent for the first five innings. Down 6-0 in the sixth, however, senior Alex Howe hit an infield-single and senior Dillon Engelhart walked. Redshirt senior Nikkie Rowe alum Jonathan Garza followed with a RBI-single, and then, after a walk loaded the bases, freshman Blake Thomas hit a sacrifice fly to bring the Broncs within four.

Howe finished 2-for-4 while Engelhart went 1-for-2 with two walks.

The Cardinals (14-27) scored all of their runs with two outs.

The Cardinals got their offense started against senior Kyle Tokunaga (1-4) right away. With two on and two out in the first, Ethan McGill hit an RBI-single, and then, after a hit batsman, a wild pitch scored a run to make it 2-0.

The Cardinals doubled their lead in the second on a two-out two-run single by Jesse Hoover to make it 4-0.

Freshman Tanner Dickerson took over in the third, and after putting up a zero in the third, the Cardinals put a runner on via an error with two outs in the fourth, setting up an RBI-single by McGill to make it 5-0.

In the fifth, a pair of infield-singles and a stolen base led to runners on the corners with two outs. Mark Whitehead followed with an RBI-single to make it 6-0.

That made a winner of Cody Richey (3-2), who pitched three scoreless innings of relief.

Dickerson pitched a career-high five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and three walks.

Redshirt senior Edinburg alum Austin Casas pitched a perfect eighth inning.

The Broncs kick-off their final home stand of the season on Friday at 7 p.m. when they open a three-game series against North Dakota at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Gates open at 6.
