Baseball Drops Series Finale to Grand Canyon

Box Score

EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team dropped the series finale of their three-game series against the Grand Canyon University Antelopes 3-2 on Sunday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

Senior Alex Howe gave the Broncs (13-21, 3-6 WAC) the lead twice early, making it 1-0 on an RBI-single in the first and 2-1 on his third home run of the season, a solo shot into the right field bullpen, in the third.

Howe finished 2-for-3 with two walks.

Every time the Broncs scored, however, the Antelopes (16-14, 6-3 WAC) answered. With two outs in the top of the second, Josh Meyer doubled and Michael Pomeroy hit an RBI-single to make it 1-1.

Then, in the fourth, Meyer hit an RBI-double to make it 2-2.

The Antelopes took the lead in the fifth when Chad De La Guerra drew a two-out walk, stole second and scored on an RBI-single by Matt Haggerty.

That was it against Alex Henson (0-1), who tied his career-high with seven strikeouts in a career-high eight innings of work, allowing six hits and two walks along the way. Henson retired the first five and the final 10 batters he faced.

Ethan Evanko (3-1) earned the win by pitching six innings, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out two.

Kyle Detwiler pitched a scoreless inning and one-third for his first save.

The Broncs close out this five-game home stand on Tuesday at 6 p.m. when they host Incarnate Word at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Gates open at 5.
