Baseball Falls to Incarnate Word

Box Score

EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team fell to the University of the Incarnate Word Cardinals 14-3 on Tuesday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium in a game ending after eight innings due to the 10-run rule.

The Broncs (13-22) held the lead early in the game. Down 1-0 in the bottom of the first, senior Alberto Morales doubled and sophomore PSJA alum Bryan Ramirez was hit by a pitch, setting up a two-out RBI-single by freshman Victor Garcia Jr. to make it 2-1.

Morales finished 2-for-4 with two doubles.

The Cardinals (10-20) answered right back against junior Clayton Haltom (0-2), loading the bases with no one out and taking advantage of a walk, a hit batsman, two wild pitches and a balk to score three runs and take a 4-2 lead in the second.

After adding two more in the third, the Cardinals sent 12 batters to the plate against three pitchers to score six runs (four earned) on four hits, one error, a passed ball and two wild pitches. The final pitcher of that inning, senior Matt Daniels, ended the threat by striking out three of the four batters he faced.

Daniels struck out a career-high tying six in two innings of relief.

The Broncs scored their final run in seventh, when senior Brandon Roush led off with a triple and scored when the throw to third went into the Broncs dugout. That brought the Broncs within 12-3, but Mark Whitehead hit a two-run single in the top of the eighth to push the Cardinals' lead back into double-figures.

Cody Rickey (1-2) picked up his first win of the season, pitching the first five innings, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out seven.

The Broncs resume Western Athletic Conference play on Friday at 7 p.m. when they open up a three-game series at Utah Valley.
