Blake English took a no-hitter into the sixth en route to pitching a four-hit shutout to lead the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team past the Sacramento State Hornets 2-0 on Saturday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
It was English's (5-3) third shutout in his last five starts.
English retired the first eight batters he faced before hitting a batter and issuing an eight-pitch walk. English then retired the next nine batters he faced. With two outs in the sixth,
Nathan Lukes dropped down a bunt towards third and beat the throw for the game's first hit.
The Hornets (32-19, 18-5 WAC) recorded their only other hit to leave the infield with one out in the seventh, on a single to right field by
Will Soto.
Kyle Moses reached on an infield-single and Lukes laid down another bunt for a single with two outs in the eighth.
English struck out one while inducing 13 groundouts and 13 fly outs. He threw 73 of his 118 pitches (61.9 percent) for strikes.
The Broncs (23-28, 13-10 WAC) gave English all the support he needed against
Justin Dillon (2-1) in the first. With two on and two outs, sophomore PSJA alum
Bryan Ramirez hit an RBI-single to make it 1-0.
The Broncs didn't get another hit until the sixth, when senior
Alberto Morales led off the inning with a double. One out after a walk and a sacrifice bunt, senior
Shane Ammon hit a hot shot to third. Soto had trouble with, allowing Ammon to beat the throw and Morales to score from third.
The Broncs and Hornets complete this three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m. Fans are encouraged to be in their seats early for the senior day ceremonies. Additionally, any fan that brings four non-perishable food items will receive a free ticket as part of the Broncs' partnership with the Food Bank RGV known as "Strike Out Hunger." Gates open at 12.
