Box ScoreEDINBURG – Senior
Andy Fortuna hit his first-career home run in the final at-bat of his final home game to send the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team past the Sacramento State Hornets 2-0 on Sunday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The Broncs (24-28, 14-10 WAC) are now assured of one of the top six seeds and a spot in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament.
The Broncs are also just the second WAC team to take a series from the Hornets (32-20, 18-6 WAC) after winning two out of three.
Fortuna came up with redshirt senior Nikki Rowe alum
Jonathan Garza at first and two outs in the bottom of the ninth. He then connected on a 2-0 pitch from
Sutter McLoughlin (3-2) and deposited it into the Broncs bullpen beyond the left field wall to end the game.
That made a winner of senior
Matthew Harrell (3-6), who was one of six Broncs pitchers to combine on a one-hit shutout by pitching a perfect ninth.
Junior
Alex Henson started for the Broncs, pitching four innings and striking out three. He allowed the lone hit, a single to
Nathan Lukes with two outs in the first. Henson retired the final 10 batters he faced.
Senior
Nolan Atkins followed with a perfect fifth, and then seniors
Matt Daniels, Edinburg alum
Austin Casas, and
Kyle Tokunaga each pitched a hitless inning.
The Broncs open up their final series before the WAC Tournament on Friday at 4 p.m. when they visit Northern Colorado.
