Baseball Drops WAC Tournament Opener

Box Score

MESA, Ariz. – The second-seeded University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team opened the Western Athletic Conference Tournament with a 9-2 loss to the third-seeded Utah Valley University Wolverines on Thursday at Cubs Park.

The Broncs (27-29) now face up to two elimination games on Friday. They will play sixth-seeded New Mexico State at 1 p.m., and then the winner of that game takes on the loser of tonight's game between top-seeded Sacramento State and fourth-seeded Bakersfield at 5 p.m.

The Wolverines (27-28) jumped on senior Sam Street (12-2) right away, loading the bases with two outs in the first. Craig Brinkerhoff drew a nine-pitch walk to force-in a run and then Greyson Bogden drove-in another run with an infield-single.

The Broncs answered right back against Ryan Evans (5-5) in the bottom of the inning, as freshman Victor Garcia Jr. and redshirt freshman Edinburg alum Edgar Cordon hit two-out RBI-singles to tie the game.

Garcia finished 2-for-3 with two walks.

That was it against Evans, who worked around six hits and six walks while striking out two in seven and one-third innings.

In the second, Kade Andrus hit an RBI-double and Mark Krueger came up with a two-out RBI-single to put the Wolverines up 4-2.

Street settled down for the next four innings, racking up seven of his eight strikeouts while keeping the Wolverines off the board.

With two outs in the seventh, however, Brinkerhoff hit an RBI-double and Bogden hit an RBI-single to knock out Street with the score 6-2.

The Wolverines added three runs in the ninth on an inside-the-park home run by Krueger and an RBI-double by Beau Kallas.
