HUNTSVILLE – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team fell to the University of Louisiana at Monroe Warhawks 3-0 to open the Sam Houston Invitational on Friday at Johnson Coliseum.
 
The Broncs (0-1) dropped each of the first two sets 24-26 before falling in the final set to the Warhawks (1-1) 20-25.
 
Senior Diara Reynolds led the Broncs with a match-high tying 12 kills. Freshman Mary Kate Clark recorded team-highs in assists (29) and digs (14) for the double-double in her first-career match. Junior Haley Durham recorded seven of the Broncs' 14 blocks.
 
Hope Pawlik led the Warhawks with 12 kills and five blocks while Kalena Caruthers had 11. Bayleigh Hoffman had a match-high 33 assists to go with 13 digs. Marcela Araya recorded a match-high 17 digs.
 
The Warhawks jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the first set, but kills by Durham and freshman Kyra Hill sparked a 6-0 run as the Broncs took a 9-8 lead. The set stayed tight from there, with the Warhawks getting the first opportunity at set point at 24-22 before Reynolds and Durham came up with kills to tie the set. After a serving error, though, Pawlik came up with a block to end the set.
 
The Warhawks scored the first four points of the second set, but the Broncs against came back to take the lead an 8-7 on a block by Durham and Clark. Just like the first set, play remained tight until the end, with the Warhawks going up 24-23 before a kill by redshirt senior Maria Kliefoth tied the set at 24-24. The Warhawks responded with a Caruthers kill and a block by Pawlik and Alannah Cullum to go up 2-0.
 
The third set was close most of the way, as the Broncs led 16-15 after a bad set by Hoffman. A kill by Hadley Swartz sparked a 6-0 run to put the Warhawks up 21-17, but the Broncs responded with a 4-0 run, capped by a block by Durham and sophomore Alisha Watson to climb within 21-20. Three-straight kills by Pawlik preceded the match winner by Caruthers to complete the sweep.
 
The Broncs play two matches on Saturday, first against Mississippi State at 11:30 a.m., and then against host Sam Houston State at 7 p.m.
