Durham's 20 Kills Not Enough as Volleyball Falls to Stephen F. Austin

RUSTON, La. – Junior Haley Durham recorded a career-high 20 kills, but the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team fell to the Stephen F. Austin Ladjacks 3-1 at the LA Tech Invitational on Saturday at Thomas Assembly Center.
 
The Broncs (1-8) dropped the first set 21-25, but bounced back to take the second set 28-26. The Broncs then lost the third and fourth sets 21-25.
 
Durham led the Broncs with a .457 hitting percentage to go with four blocks. Redshirt senior Maria Kliefoth had 13 kills on .385 hitting and a match-high five blocks. Sophomore Anjané Janda played errorless volleyball, coming up with 10 kills on 20 attacks for a .500 hitting percentage.
 
Jill Ivy led the Ladyjacks (5-5) with 21 kills on .405 hitting to go with eight digs and three blocks. Justice Walker had 11 kills on .500 hitting with four blocks.
 
Durham, Kliefoth and senior Diara Reynolds all had early kills in the opening set as the Broncs and Ladyjacks traded points and were tied at 3-3. The Ladyjacks scored the next three points as part of a 5-1 run to go up 8-4. The Broncs pulled back within two on kills by Janda and Durham, but the Ladjacks scored four of the next five points to take a five-point lead. The Ladjacks went up as many as seven at 22-15 on a block by Walker and Kelsi Bartlett, but sophomore Alisha Watson recorded a pair of kills to power a 6-1 run, bringing the Broncs within 21-23. After a timeout, however, a Jacque Allen kill and an error ended the set.
 
The second set was tight throughout, with the largest lead by either team coming when the Broncs went up 11-7 on a Durham kill to cap a 5-2 run. The Broncs held the lead or were tied until an Ivy kill put the Ladyjacks up 22-21. A Madison Martin ace put the Ladyjacks up two, but kills by Reynolds and Watson helped the Broncs scored three-straight to get set point. Ivy tied the set with a kill, but the Broncs again took the advantage on an attack error. The Ladyjacks scored the next two to go up 26-25, but Durham tied the set with a kill, and then, after an attack error, Durham ended the set to tie the match at 1-1.
 
The Ladyjacks took a big lead in the third set, going up 18-10, but Durham came up with two kills and Watson, Reynolds and Kliefoth had one each as the Broncs responded with a 10-4 run to pull within 20-22. After trading points, however, Ivy and Allen came up with kills to end the set.
 
The Broncs led 4-1 out of the gate in the fourth set after a pair of Durham kills. After the Ladyjacks came back to tie it twice, the Broncs took the lead back, including at 12-11 on a Janda kill. The Ladyjacks responded with an 8-2 run to go up 19-14. The Ladyjacks extended their lead to 23-16, but kills by Kliefoth and Janda helped the Broncs pull within 21-24 before a Paige Holland kill ended the match.
 
The Broncs conclude the LA Tech Invitational at 4:30 when the play New Orleans.
