Box ScoreCORUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team fell to the University of Houston Cougars 3-0 (25-27, 15-25, 15-25) on Friday to open the Islanders Classic at Dugan Wellness Center.
Redshirt senior
Maria Kliefoth led the Broncs (2-9) with nine kills on .263 hitting. Freshman
Mary Kate Clark recorded a match-high 24 assists. Senior
Krysta Freitas had a team-high 14 digs. Junior
Haley Durham posted a team-high three blocks.
Kadi Kullerkann led the Cougars (7-4) with a match-high 12 kills.
Destiny Patterson dished out 22 assists while
Natalie Keck had a match-high 17 digs.
Kati Water posted a match-high four blocks.
The first set was tight throughout, with neither team going up by more than two until an attack error put the Cougars up 17-14. The Cougars still led by three at 21-18, but kills by sophomores
Alisha Watson and
Anjané Janda sandwiched an attack error as the Broncs pulled even at 21-21. Janda came up with the Broncs' next two points as well, using kills to tie the set at 22-22 and 23-23. The Broncs reached set point on a kill by senior
Diara Reynolds, but after a service error,
Bryanna Lawrence came up with a kill to give the Cougars set point. Durham responded with a kill to tie the set, but Lawrence and Kullerkann came up with kills to put the Cougars up 1-0.
The second set was close early, as the Broncs were within 5-6 on a Watson kill, but the Cougars responded with a 16-6 run, punctuated by a Kullerkann kill, to pull away and take a 2-0 lead.
The Broncs jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the third set thanks in part two a pair of blocks by Durham, one of which she combined on with Janda, and the other of which she teamed up for with Clark. The Broncs still led by four on a Durham kill that made it 9-5, but the Cougars scored the next nine points and 18 of the next 22 to pull away for the sweep.
The Broncs finish up the Islanders Classic on Saturday when they play host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 1 p.m. and Nebraska-Omaha at 5 p.m.
