Box ScoreCORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team fell to the host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 3-0 (21-25, 18-25, 9-25) on Saturday at the Islanders Classic at Dugan Wellness Center.
Junior
Haley Durham led the Broncs (2-10) with 11 kills on .450 hitting and a team-high four blocks. Freshman
Mary Kate Clark dished out a team-high 25 assists to go with seven digs.
Briana Brink led the Islanders (7-8) with 11 kills on .350 hitting.
Chelby Stanford recorded a match-high 27 assists.
Hailey King had a match-high 18 digs.
Kirstee McGarva and
Brittany Gilpin each posted a team-high three blocks.
The Broncs jumped out to leads of 3-0 and 4-2 in the first set. After the Islanders took a 5-4 lead on a Gilpin kill, the Broncs tied it at 5-5 and 6-6 on Durham kills, and 7-7 on a kill by redshirt senior
Maria Kliefoth. The Broncs were still within 9-10 after an error, but a Brink kill sparked a 13-5 run as the Islanders went up 23-14. The Broncs responded with a 7-1 run powered by three kills from senior
Diara Reynolds to pull within three, but that's as close as they got.
The Islanders led 8-2 out of the gate in the second set. They maintained that six-point lead at 11-5 on a
Kelsee Felux kill, at which point the Broncs scored four-straight points, thanks in part to kills by
Anjané Janda and Kliefoth to pull within 9-11. The Islanders responded by scoring the next four points, but the Broncs then scored three in a row to get within 13-16. The Islanders responded with a 6-2 run to pull away and take a 2-0 lead.
Brink had a pair of kills as the Islanders jumped out to a 5-0 third set lead. The Broncs got as close as four at 4-8 and 5-9 on a pair of Durham kills, but the Islanders responded with a 12-2 run to complete the sweep.
The Broncs finish up the Islanders Classic when they face Nebraska-Omaha at 5 p.m.
