EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team fell to the Texas Tech Red Raiders 3-0 at the UTPA Tournament on Friday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
 
The Broncs (1-5) dropped the first set 17-25, the second set 12-25 and the third set 22-25.
 
Redshirt senior Maria Kliefoth led the Broncs with nine kills. Freshman Mary Kate Clark recorded 19 assists. Redshirt junior Macey Singleton had 11 digs. Junior Haley Durham posted three blocks.
 
Jenna Allen led the Red Raiders (5-0) with 13 kills and nine digs. Mikia Mills had 10 kills on .562 hitting. Marguerite Grubb had a match-high 34 assists while Audrey Freagniere came up with 20 digs. Lauren Douglass posted a match-high seven blocks.
 
The Broncs' first two kills of the first set came from Durham as the Broncs were within 3-5. After the Red Raiders responded with a 5-2 run, Kliefoth came up with a kill to make it 6-10, but the Red Raiders scored the next five points to pull away and go up 1-0.
 
The Red Raiders scored the first five points of the second set. After a Broncs timeout, sophomore Anjané Janda recorded a kill as the Broncs scored three-straight to pull within two. The Red Raiders went up 9-3 thanks in-part to three attack errors, but the Broncs took advantage of two attack errors and an ace by Clark to pull within 6-9. The Red Raiders responded with a 12-3 run to extend their lead to 21-9 while jumping out to a 2-0 lead.
 
The Broncs trailed early in the third set, but took their first lead at 5-4 on a kill by sophomore Alisha Watson. The Broncs next led at 8-7 on a block by Durham and freshman Kyra Hill. The Broncs held their lead for most of the rest of the set, going up by as many as four at 20-16 on a Janda kill, and 22-18 on a service error, but the Red Raiders scored the final seven points of the match to complete the sweep.
 
The Broncs conclude the tournament on Sunday at 2 p.m. when they face Northern Arizona. It will be the second match of the day, as Texas Tech plays Lamar at 11 a.m. Doors open at 10.
