Box ScoreCHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team opened Western Athletic Conference play with a 75-60 victory over the Chicago State University Cougars on Saturday a Jones Convocation Center.
Seniors
Brittany Bush and
Cha'zaye Wright led the Broncs (8-8, 1-0 WAC) with 16 points each. Bush did so on 7-of-12 shooting with five rebounds. It was a career high in scoring for Wright, who went 6-for-9 from the field, including 4-of-6 from behind the arc, with four rebounds.
Layne Murphy led the Cougars (2-12, 0-1 WAC) with 12 points and nine rebounds.
Chanel Wilson-Stewart had 10 points and five blocks.
The Broncs jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the opening four minutes on a layup by Bush, a jumper by junior
Rickell Preston, a three by senior
Tonisha Walker and a layup by sophomore
Shawnte' Goff. The Cougars responded with an 11-0 run to take the lead on a pair of
Paris Williams free throws three minutes later, but Bush hit three straight baskets and one free throw as part of an 11-0 run by the Broncs that made the score 18-11.
The Broncs pushed their lead back out to nine at 22-13 on a layup by freshman Weslaco alum
Laura Van Tilburg with 8:19 remaining in the first half, but the Cougars came back to tie the game at 27-27 on a layup by
Tashuna Brown five minutes later.
The Cougars took the lead back on a three by
Konner Harris that made it 32-29, and they held that lead until Goff and Walker hit back-to-back threes in the middle of a 10-0 run that saw the Broncs go up 43-38 early in the second half.
The Cougars led against at 49-47 after a
Jasmine Sanders three, but freshman
Hildur Björg Kjartansdóttir hit a layup and a three as the Broncs took a lead that they did not relinquish.
The Broncs return home on Thursday at 7 p.m. when they host Seattle U at the UTPA Fieldhouse. Doors open at 6.
