Box ScoreEDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team opened the second half on a 20-4 run to pull away and beat the Seattle University Redhawks 80-58 on Thursday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
Up 35-25 at halftime, the Broncs (9-8, 2-0 WAC) hit 9 of their first 10 shots and senior
Tonisha Walker scored 11 of her 12 points as the Broncs went up 55-29 with 14:16 remaining.
The Redhawks (4-13, 1-1 WAC) responded with a 13-2 run to pull within 57-42, but that's as close as they got.
Sophomore
Shawnte' Goff led the Broncs with 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including 4-of-5 from behind the arc. Senior
Brittany Bush scored a season-high tying 16 points with four rebounds and two steals.
Taelor Ross led the Redhawks with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Crystal Allen scored 15 points with four rebounds.
The Broncs forced 21 turnovers while committing just eight. The Broncs scored 21 points off of turnovers while allowing just three.
Bush hit a pay of layups and senior
T'Ondria Nolen made a three as the Broncs jumped out to a 7-2 lead. Ross hit a layup and Allen made a three to tie the game, but the Broncs used a 16-4 run over the following eight and a half minutes to go up 23-11.
The Broncs extended their lead to 26-13 on a three by Goff. A
Wilma Afunugo layup and an Allen three brought the Redhawks within eight, but freshman
Troi Swain nailed a three, stole the ensuing inbound pass and made a jumper to put the Broncs back up by 13.
The Broncs are back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m. when they host preseason WAC favorite Bakersfield at the UTPA Fieldhouse. Doors open at 1.
