Women's Basketball Makes History with Big Win Over Bakersfield

EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team improved to 3-0 in conference play and 8-1 at home for the first time in program history by knocking off the preseason Western Athletic Conference favorite Bakersfield Roadrunners 77-60 on Saturday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
 
The Broncs are now 10-8 for the second time in program history and first time since 2008-09. The Broncs can break the record for best 19-game start with a win in their next game on Thursday at 8 p.m. at Utah Valley.
 
By sweeping the home stand, the Broncs, winners of three in a row, have now beaten the teams picked to finish first and third in the preseason coaches poll and first and second in the media poll. The Broncs were picked to finish second in the coaches poll and tied for third in the media poll.
 
Senior T'Ondria Nolen led the Broncs by hitting a career-high three three-pointers in three attempts while going 4-for-6 from the field and a career-high 7-for-10 from the line to score a career-high 18 points with nine rebounds, a career-high tying seven assists and a career-high tying four steals. Junior Rickell Preston scored a career-high 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field, plus 5-of-5 from the line, to go with seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Sophomore Shawnte' Goff scored 17 points with five rebounds two assists and one steal.
 
WAC Preseason Player of the Year Tyonna Outland led the Roadrunners (12-6, 1-2 WAC) with 24 points on 8-of-19 shooting from the field plus 8-for-10 from the line.
 
After Nolen opened the game with a three, Outland scored six points to power an 11-2 run as the Roadrunners went up 11-5.
 
A few minutes later, with the Broncs down 13-7, freshman Hildur Björg Kjartansdóttir hit two threes, sandwiching a Nolen three, as the Broncs scored nine-straight points to take the lead. The run was the start of a 13-minute span in which the Broncs outscored the Roadrunners 37-13 to take a 44-26 lead. During that span, the Broncs went 14-for-23 from the field (.652) and 6-for-10 from behind the arc while holding the Roadrunners to 4-of-20 (.200) shooting, including 1-of-6 from behind the arc.
 
The Broncs extended their lead to 20 on a layup by senior Brittany Bush with 15:17 remaining that made it 51-31.
 
The Roadrunners responded with a 12-3 run to pull within 11, and then, with the Broncs' lead back out to 16, the Roadrunners went on an 11-2 run to pull within 65-58, but the Broncs scored 12 of the game's final 14 points to seal the victory.
